Getting paid to play games sounds too good to be true. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the “pay” turns out to be a gift card, or the games are boring surveys in disguise. But a few of these are the real deal.
I tested four game platforms with my own devices. Some pay cash. One pays only in gift cards. One barely pays at all but lets you play games nobody else has seen yet. Here is how they compare.
| App | What it pays | How you get paid | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoodGamerGroup | Around $1 a minute | About 48 hours after | Mobile, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo | Focus groups and playtests |
| PlaytestCloud | About $9 per 20-minute test | Per test, no minimum | iPhone 5s or Android 5.0 and up | Quick, reliable pocket money |
| GameTester.gg | Varies, around $5 | On demand, $25 minimum | PC, Mac, phone, or VR | Gamers who want early access |
| Antidote | Steam or Amazon gift cards | Within weeks of a session | Desktop or smartphone | Gamers fine with gift cards, not cash |
GoodGamerGroup: the top payer, if you can get in the room
A dollar a minute. That is the headline, and it is a good one (do the math on a full hour of it). GoodGamerGroup rewards effort. The real money comes from the bigger commitments, like in-person focus groups and playtests.
Do those and this is a tough gig to beat. Payment lands about 48 hours later, which is fast. It works across mobile and the big consoles too. My GoodGamerGroup review has the details on landing those higher-paying sessions.
PlaytestCloud: the reliable little earner
PlaytestCloud is my pick for simple, dependable pay. About $9 for a 20-minute test. No minimum cashout, so you get paid per test instead of waiting to hit some far-off number. And it has a solid history of actually paying testers.
The tests are genuinely fun. Just keep your head on straight about it. This is occasional pocket money, not a paycheck. You will need an iPhone 5s or an Android 5.0 or newer. See my PlaytestCloud review for how often tests come around.
GameTester.gg: for the love of the game
Let me be straight. The money here is small, around $5 a test, and there is a $25 minimum before you can cash out through XTRM. So why would anyone bother? The games. You get to play titles that have not even been announced yet.
If you love gaming, that early access is the real prize. The cash is a bonus. Be warned though: the first month feels slow, like nothing is happening. Push through, build your XP, and it picks up. My GameTester.gg review tells you how to set up on day one. Not a gamer? Take a pass on this one.
Antidote: only if gift cards are fine with you
Antidote lets you test unreleased games, which is cool. But here is the dealbreaker for a lot of people. It does not pay cash. You earn Steam or Amazon gift cards, full stop.
That is the whole story on Antidote. The platform itself is fine. Gamers will like it. Non-gamers will not. If gift cards work for you, read my Antidote review and give it a look. If you want real money in your bank, look higher up this page.
The bottom line for gamers
Want the most money and you can do focus groups? GoodGamerGroup. Want steady, no-fuss cash? PlaytestCloud is the safe bet. In it for the games themselves? GameTester.gg. And Antidote only makes sense if a gift card feels like a win to you.
